Water Based Paint Production Plants
What is water based paint?
What is a water-based paint briefly includes water-based paints, water-dissolved micro-plastic binder, filler and pigment particles. Water-based paints are water-soluble but become water-resistant after drying. Different types of materials are used as binders, such as acrylic, vinyl, PVA or alkyd.
There are two main types of paints: water-based and solvent-based. All types of paints consist of pigment and binder mixture. While latex and acrylic paints use water as binders, solvent-based paints use mineral spirit. Some special dyes may use thinner mixtures as binders. Water-based is generally safer than solvent-based paint, and there are special waste regulations on how to dispose of solvent-based paints.
Latex paints have many advantages over oil paints. Since they do not need an organic solvent, they emit much less organic smoke (VOC) than oil paints. However, synthetic water-based varnishes are not free from harmful substances. They contain agents that can spread VOCs, such as antibacterial, anti-mold, quick-drying or protective agents.
Water-based paints dry faster and are more flexible than oil-based paints. They are more suitable for application on wood because they allow the paint on wood to shrink and expand without cracks. Usually they need more layers to be completely opaque compared to oil paints. Water-based paint prices are more affordable than oil paint.
Oil-based paint is more durable but takes longer to dry and requires turpentine or thinner to be thinned. Oil-based paints are made with alkyd (synthetic) or flaxseed (natural) oils. Alkyd paint is more common because it is cheaper and harder. It is good for oil-based paint laying work, because the floors are subject to more friction and wear than walls.
How are paints made?
The paint consists of pigment, solvent, resin and various additives. Pigments give color to the paint, solvents make it easy to give the paint its consistency, while the resins help to dry, add some qualities to the paint such as additives, mold and anti-fungal properties.
Is water-based paint burning?
Water-based paints are not flammable, but can contain toxic substances depending on the type. For example, it may contain metallic pigments such as silver or mercury, which are considered hazardous waste.
How to understand water based paint?
Oil-based paint often feels smoother when you touch it, but a quick and easy test can be done to say for sure. Pour some nail polish remover acetone-based solvent on a cloth or paper towel and rub the paint surface with this. No grease is smeared on the cloth and it is understood to be water-based if it passes into your paint cloth.
